Mary Kay Brooks.  Two guiding principles for change are compassion and accountability. Compassion helps us hang in there when life is hard. Accountability compels us to use what we learn, as it turns us away from self-pity and blame. Sometimes we learn life’s lessons the hard way-it just seems to be part of being human. If you’re feeling stuck in a confusing or painful situation, consider therapy. It isn’t about telling you what to do. It’s about learning how to sort things out for yourself. My approach is active, direct and flexible. I employ cognitive, behavioral, insight, relaxation training, and mind, body, spirit approaches. My career began in health care, and I offer over 20 years experience. I particularly enjoy working on relationship issues with people of all ages.  Website Picture__Carolyn Connor

CAROLYN CONNOR, LCSW, LSCSW

I believe that each of us is part of a complex multigenerational family system.  As understanding of one’s part in this system unfolds, insight increases causing anxiety to lessen, and the way forward to become clear.

I work primarily with mature teens and adults of all ages.

I do not believe in quick fixes or instant cures.  I do believe in careful and thoughtful therapeutic work that can bring some relief in the short term and increasing understanding and more solid functioning over time.

I believe my responsibility as your therapist is to continue to do my own work which enables me to be a non-anxious and caring presence who can help you find your own answers.

I believe we are all complex beings including mind, body and spirit so that unrest in any part of this neuro-bio-chemical-spiritual system will cause unrest in the other parts. Consequently, I encourage clients to be sensitive to and take care of each part of their being.

My clinical experience over many years is varied.  I have worked in medical and psychiatric hospitals treating acutely medically and/ or psychiatric ill persons and their families; in home health settings with those who struggle with chronic or terminal illness; in an office with ten psychiatrists treating individuals, couples, and families with widely varied diagnoses and degree of severity; in schools with students, teachers and families and in mental health clinics.  As a member of a child developmental delay/disability multi-disciplined assessment team, I worked with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities and other psychiatric disorders.  This always included working with the child’s family and teachers.  I have worked with Active Duty military, Reservists, National Guard members and the families of each, both in this country and abroad.  This included working with severe PTSD symptoms, family violence, sexual assaults, addictions, gender and sexual identity struggles, cultural adaptation issues, loneliness, grief and loss.

I have a Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Missouri and a certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry with emphasis on the Bowen Multigenerational Family System theory.  It is this theory that undergirds my practice.  I am trained in Critical Incident Stress Management.

Anna Dell Johnson MA, LPC

I received my Bachelor and Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from UMKC.  Previous to this I graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1977 with an RN diploma.  I have worked in many crisis areas of nursing including drug and alcohol rehabilitation and crisis psychiatric inpatient care, ICU, a burn unit, as well as a GI nurse and a clinic RN for several years.  Prior to nursing I was a respiratory therapist and worked primarily with patients on ventilators in ICU.

My life changed dramatically when I had a stroke in my late 40’s.  I knew I would eventually work with people who had the perception of an illness as trauma, whether it was a procedure or an ongoing diagnosis, a past experience or hospitalization.  I knew there were effects on not only the patient but the family relationships. .  My role is helping the person to integrate the experiences back into their lives in a positive manner so they are even stronger than before and also to assist the client in accepting the challenge that the trauma experience will change them.  Together we can make this a positive outcome.

I work with clients who experience PTSD, depression and anxiety.  I see adults with ADHD and I work with  clients who have post-part um depression and self-harm issues, as well as LGBT relationship issues. I see children from age 10 and older.

I have evening and week-end appointments.

I believe that the problems we experience in life have solutions and I will work with you to help you find them!  You may not realize that those solutions lie within yourself and  by actively listening to you, giving feedback and suggestions, I can help bring them to your awareness.  I also believe that growth involves learning new skills and patterns, so I often teach coping skills to manage stress and anxiety, focus better, and change thought patterns and habits.  I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings in mental health for over thirty years, so I have experience with most diagnosis and treatment approaches.  I specialize in anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder;  assessment and treatment of attention deficit disorder; major depression and other depressive disorders;  bipolar disorder and other mood swing disorders; obsessive compulsive disorder; and adjustment disorders.  I also specialize in helping people get through difficult experiences in life such as marital problems, domestic violence, assault and abuse, grief and loss, and work-related problems.  I work with adults, adolescents, children, couples and families.

I am credentialed with most major insurance policies and most EAP companies, and self pay rates are available on request.

Thank you for considering allowing me to help you with your journey.

Seeking help can be difficult. We often think we should be able to handle any problem that comes our way. However, everyone needs support at some point in their lives. A major crisis, a life transition, loss, relationship problems, emotional needs, our past interfering with our present, or just daily stressors become too much to deal with alone. We forget our strengths and become isolated, depressed, angry, or make poor choices.

As your counselor, I use an eclectic approach to help you find solutions to your problems, rediscover and develop your inner strengths, and acquire valuable communication skills so you may have a happy and healthy relationship with others and yourself!

If you are looking for a safe and compassionate therapist, I would love to work with you!
